Val Landa has been painting and drawing since the  early sixties when she studied with the world-renowned Stanislau Rapotec.  From 1961 to 1984  she studied at the Royal Art Society (portraiture), East Sydney Tech College (now the National Art School), and was a member of a weekly Life-Drawing group at Hunter’s Hill, which included amongst its members of about 8 people, Nora Heyson, Franklin Bennett, Paddy Taylor, and other well-known artists.  During this period, she exhibited and did workshops, worked at Gladesville Hospital Pottery Studio in ceramics, and helped set up the studio there.  She also studied Sculpture for three years with Jean Broome-Norton, specialising  in portraits and the figure. She also exhibited in private galleries.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

VAL LANDA – 2006.

I have always leaned towards the figurative in my paintings, and even though my work at this point of time APPEARS to be abstract, it remains for the eyes of the beholder to decipher and find the figurative elements within these marks that I have made.  It is the creative process of painting and drawing and the aim to achieve a balance of design, colour, mark and especially mood in the final rendition of that process, which gives me great joy, and ultimately personal satisfaction.  The concentration needed to render a painting or drawing, provokes, in me, an inner contentment.

"There is never a blank canvas in front of my eyes."

Val Landa
